I’m a happy Mac user, running my business through an iMac, Macbook Air and iPhone yet, for somebody starting their business today I’d strongly advise using Windows PCs.
The Rest of the World Uses Windows
I’ve developed an enviably efficient workflow using my Mac. I’ve got the software configured just right, I’ve found scripts to save me time, set up custom templates and, although there’s still room for improvement, I’m happy with the way my work gets done.
I’m now looking to recruit more staff and delegate a lot of the work I do day-to-day. The problem I’ve discovered is that nearly every member of staff I hire will be using Windows PCs.
In order to train the team to complete the work I’m doing myself, I have to find the equivalent software on Windows, learn how to use it myself and then prepare operations manuals specifically for that software. I also have to migrate my settings, templates, preferences over to the new software.
This may also cause issues if I ever have to replicate the work of a team member, perhaps if they’re sick, resign or get fired. I’d have to run the Windows software myself to maintain the continuity and ultimately never using the original Mac software again.
- I use Totals to manage my Purchase Orders & Invoices. It’s a great program and I’ve created templates to format the documents to the colors of each business I run. The moment I need a member of staff to do this work though they’ll have to use a Windows application that will certainly not be compatible. I’ll have a beautiful, organized set of records in Totals up to this point, and then a completely new set of records in my team members application.
- I use TextExpander to expand keyboard shortcuts into large paragraphs of text which I use when instructing how to place or orders or make payments. Should I continue to use this then I’m going to need an equivalent program for Windows and a way of keeping the expansions synchronized.
There are some applications that have both a Mac and a Windows version, this is anise convenience but will also require me to purchase two versions of the same software which is a waste of money.
Macs are Over-Priced
For a single computer the costs might be justified but if you’re planning to buy computers for your team members to use too, Windows computers are far cheaper and usually very reasonable to upgrade.
Microsoft Office for Mac is Significantly Behind the Windows Version.
- Excel will not save in UTF-8 CSV format which is the standard format when importing data into services such as web carts, contact lists etc.
- Mail-Merging with images is highly restricted on Word for Mac. This is a great feature when creating product catalogs and means Mac users need to find an alternative means to do it.
- There is no Organizational Chart Creator in Word – something I rarely use but was a huge disappointment when I went to use it this week.
A Lack of Software
I concede that there’s a lot of great software on the Mac, and maybe some is superior to their Windows counterparts but the niche software and the industry-leading power software are often Windows-only, or their Windows version is superior in features.
- Quicken for Mac is YEARS behind the Windows version and it’s very messy getting the two programs to work well together.
- There’s very little software on the Mac for Affiliate marketers. Windows has a huge variety in software that; creates banners, site maps, landing pages, sales letters, crawls data etc.
- I’ve still not found any software that can generate me product catalogs on a Mac. I’ve had to resort to hiring a company to develop this for me in FileMaker.
Simply No Need
For most of us, our office needs rarely go beyond; a word processor, email client, spreadsheet and web browser. Buying a Mac is completely overkill.
